Year of China Events

This year at Reinhardt University it was the year of China. I attended two events here at Reinhardt. One was the stargazing event and the other was the Photo Exhibit, although I didn't actually get to attend the photo exhibit event because I had work but I went into Finch to look at all the pictures and I also watched the video made of China online.

FIRST YEAR OF CHINA EVENT: (Stargazing)
Dr. Gregory and other professors here at Reinhardt told us the story of the Chinese Valentine's Day. It was a romantic love story of Zhinu, the 7th daughter of the Goddess, and Nuilang, a young male cowherder. The Chinese Valentine's Day occurs on the 7th day of the 7th month in the Chinese calendar. They are the reason we have Valentine's Day. I learned a lot from the story while looking into the night sky and trying to locate as many stars that I knew and could remember. It was a fun and great night and very interesting.

SECOND YEAR OF CHINA EVENT: (Photo Exhibit)
As I said before I didn't actually get to attend the event unfortantly due to work ut I did visit the pictures and look at all of them and I watched the China video online. They were all very interesting and very good, I thought. In the photos you could realy see the different culture they have there and how they live and celebrate different events and celebrations. In the video made by Michelle Harlow's experience, it was really interesting to see how it really is over in China. It was also interesting to see all the things she experienced while there and to see all the things she saw.

Advertising

Advertising! It's everywhere! We see all different types of advertising everywhere we are and everywhere we go. Advertising comes in our lives in many different ways, such as on TV commercials, billboards, movies, magazines, newspapers, ads, etc. Advertising is used to sell a product or to get a brand name known.

Companies spend millions of dollars just on one Superbowl commercial just to get their brand name or product out there for the world to see. Wall Street Journal says, "A 30-second ad spot in this year's Super Bowl costs an average of $3.5 million." That's a bit extreme for just one 30-second ad spot if you ask me.

Advertising agents use anything and everything to get any type of advertising out there in the world. Some advertising is funny, some is infortmational, and some is just straight to the point. Advertising can be found now before or during a YouTube video that you watch. There's advertising when you go to see a movie in threates, all the ads and commercials before the movie actually starts and I believe that movie trailers are a way of advertising too. Advertising is catorgized as something trying to be sold to you or pleasing to the world or helpful.

In the picture below are some of the words that advertising agents think of and use when thinking of how they should advertise their product.

In the picture below it shows how advertising is used and what works best.
The chart is from April 2009, but it still shows how advertising is mostly used. Just think about what it is now with all the new technology we have in the world.

In the video below it's the truth about advertising and how corps. try to use advertising for a product.
It shows how the marketing companies have a lot of head-butting when it comes to advertising. They are trying to impress and get the best advertising out there for their product.

Television

Everyone has watched some type of TV in their lifetime, whether it be a daily TV show to the news or to TV seasons and shows. TV shows have changed from when I was little to now. When I was little the popular TV shows were scooby-doo, rocket power, and power puff girls, and shows like that. Now popular TV shows for kids are things like Glee and Spongebob, and shows like that. Kids' TV shows aren't what they use to be when I was little, they are a little more graphic and crude and mean, at least from what I noticed. But then again there's always Barney, it's still the same and probably always will be. Barney is a good show for kids. Kids shows are also more musical now too. Like there's the Wiggles, Little Einsteins, Glee, and a lot more that are musical orientated.
For Example: The Little Einsteins theme song

In TV shows now they have a lot of reality TV shows like Teen Mom, Jersey Shore, and also shows like The Voice and American Idol. Reality shows aren't really real life though, they're scripted, but people believe that they are real life. But people don't actually live lives like that in TV shows. Also if you put someone infront of a camera they're not going to act like they normally would they would be "putting on a show" for the camera. For instance take a look at Jersey Shore.

This is the normal Jersey Shore trailer for Season 6 (the final season)

This is another trailer for Jersey Shore Season 6 (the final season).
People are overly obessed with Jersey Shore and they think it's reality but really it's scripted and sometimes people don't always see the difference and they think that if it's on TV and it's called reality then it's real life when in most cases like 9 out of 10 reality TV is scripted.

TV shows have really changed over the years too. I've noticed that more TV shows are focusing on sex, drugs, and partying. Kids are becoming more aware of things like that through TV shows that they watch rather than from people at school or people in their family. Some of the Popular TV Shows are listed in the link and it gives a discription of what the TV show is about. Most of the TV shows are kinda about the same things just a few things changed up. But it's what is popular right now.

Nowadays you don't even have to be infront of a television to watch TV shows or be at the TV when the show permieres. Now you can just go online to watch TV shows. They also have services like hulu where you can download it to any device and watch TV shows.

Music

Music is a big part of everyone's life. Whether you listen to it everyday or write songs yourself. I know for me music is sometimes used to express me feelings. It's like someone wrote the song for my mood and feelings and what I'm going through. I'm not talented enough to write my own songs so I'm glad that there are people out there who make their living off writing songs and music for other people. Because a lot of people in the world go through the same things. It's a way to express yourself and alo a way to show others that they aren't alone. Everyone experiences the same tings at some point in their lives.

In class we watched a documentary called Before the Music Dies (2007) it was about how music changes with each generation and the way music is presented in ech generation is also different. It also talked about how the images and apperance of the music singers has changed. Like their ideal music singer image is thin, beautiful/stunning, and a great voice whether it's their real voice or auto-tuned.

For example Adele is a good singer and it's her actual voice that she sings with, no auto-tune, but people don't really like her because she doesn't have the "look". Then you look at Britney Spears and she's done things wrong but people still admire her because she has the "look" even though she doesn't sing with her natural, real voice like she use to back when she first started singing.

There's shows on TV like The Voice and American Idol that have normal people come onto the shw and sing and try to be the last contestant standing to be the next big singer. I know that there was a conspiracy made about American Idol saying that people were voting for the young good-looking white males who could play guitar were the ones who kept winning American Idol. There is was all about looks about who was winning the show. As for The Voice there's four judges and they don't get to see the contestant, instead the contestant is judged only on their voice as to which judge will turn their chair around to fight for the contestant to be on their team. She appareance may become a factor in voting after the chair is already turned around but for the begining they were only judged upon their voices.
For example this is a contestant on The Voice this season who has a great voice, Cassadee Pope. For the live rounds where America gets to vote they dress her up and do her make up and hair to show her beauty, even though she's already pretty in her own way but they try to help her with appereance to get America's vote.

Media Literacy

In today's world, our lives revolve around the internet and what's to be found on it. Most people spend a lot of their time on the internet either on social networking cites, shopping cites like ebay, or just searching google or bing. Most people nowadays probably wouldn't know how to live their lives without the internet or just technology in general. Everyone pretty much has a smartphone now and they have internet on their phones; there's also iPads, iPod touchs.

The videos I watched on youtube were Social Media Revolution and Did you know? They talk about the percentages of people how in web. Like one of the facts were 1 out 5 couples meet on an online dating site. Match.com for instance is an online dating site and things like that work for some people and doesn't work for others. The internet is just full of possibilies for different types of people.

Now take Facebook, in one of the videos it says that facebook has more daily web traffic than google. Facebook is a popular social networking site. You can pretty much find anyone and any company on facebook. It's all about searching. Now if you take Twitter and Instagram, it's like you're just taking certain parts from facebook; Twitter being the status updates and wall posts and Instagram being the pictures only. Then there's Pinterest, it's like a girls' dream world or diary on the internet and all organized into boards on the internet. The internet is always expanding and coming up with new things for people to use in their daily lives.

Page One: Inside The New York Times

News media has changed from being in newspapers and trying to get the story out first before the other newspapers and having the biggest story out there. We barely see newspapers around anymore; TV news stations have taken over newspapers and actually news magazines too.

Facebook and Twitter have taken over the media on vthe internet, espically Twitter. On Facebook all the news stations have facebook pages now so even if you miss the TV news you can always go on facebook and find out the latest hard hitting news that happened in your area. You can also just go on facebook and know the news before it hits the TV news at night. On Twitter people are always constantly updating what they see, hear, and experience.

In the movie Page One: Inside The New York Times, they talked about how if you were a journalist and didn't have a Twitter than you weren't hitting the news first. Also when you're a journalist you have to go searching for the news on the internet, out in the world, just whatever it takes to be the one who finds the stories first. For example in the movie there was a story on youtube that was filmed and it was "hidden" so the journalist had to go in search for this story on youtube. The internet helps them find their hard hitting stories.

The Walt Disney Company

Walt Disney, we've all heard of him, watched his films, his TV shows, and been to his parks, but do you know the company and the current holdings of the company and what all is involved in the company? Well for starters, the Walt Disney Company is most commonly referred to as just Disney as we most know. The Walt Disney Company is used for entertainment purposes such as movies, TV shows, characters, theme parks, etc. What most people probably don't know is Disney is divided into four major business segments: Studio Entertainment, Parks and Resorts, Consumer Products, and Media Networks. Disney has also spread to several different corporations for example some of the corporations that Disney is apart of are ABC, ESPN, A&E networks, and ABC Family. The company also owns 14 theme parks around the world. Walt Disney is the largest diverse family entertainment and media enterprise. And of course, we all know mickey mouse is the official mascot of Walt Disney.

Some good aspects of the Walt Disney Company are their spectacular films, hit TV shows, catchy songs, and adorable characters such as mickey mouse and minnie mouse. Disney has been around since the 1923. It is very well known and is possibly the most popular company in today's world, because it is known worldwide.

Some bad aspects of the Walt Disney Company is that there were several conspiracy theories about Disney having sexual innuendo or references hidden in some of their animated movies. Some of the Disney movies included The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Disney's orininal home video releases of The Rescuers.
